I visited the Philippines with a Filipino friend last April to catch its famed summer season and beaches. I half-expected a place where people still ride carabaos and plant rice all day since my friend rattled on and on about how they eat with their fingers. But to my surprise, the Philippines has sprawling malls, superb beaches, and to my delight, good golf courses. My Nike apparel and preppy polo shirts weren't even noticeable. Plus,
native Filipino food is just divine that I can't really blame my friend for wanting to extend the food experience to his hands.
Speaking of golf courses, he took me to
Evercrest Resort in Batangas. It was a resort and golf club affair. I can't believe how low the rates are for such a grand place. It boasts of an 18-hole golf course bordered by lush trees and greenery. It also has a golf shop, a putting green, and a driving range. Golf carts and caddies abound so I didn't have any trouble finding one. There are also golf professionals who offer lessons for all skill levels. I was thinking it's a good way to start the kids. The well-kept tifton grass, ravines, and hills that meet the blue skies and white clouds can inspire any golfer to play his best. The greens are challenging, even for longtime golfers. After a game of golf, my friend and I enjoyed the hotel accommodations -- complete with fine dining, massage, and a Jacuzzi. My friend told me their country is called the Pearl of the East, and with a golf course like this, I won't disagree.
My best friend, who is an excellent golf player, hates it when she gets her feet wet during a golf game in a soggy and drippy golf course. She always complains that every time she purchases new golf shoes that claim to be water-proofed, her feet still get
