Nicklaus was the son of a pharmacist and was born in Columbus, Ohio. After surviving a mild case of polio at the tender age of ten years old, Nicklaus started playing golf at the Scioto Country Club. At the young age of 12, he was able to win his first Ohio State Junior title.
Jack Nicklaus' golf record
He began to play as a professional golfer when he joined the PGA Tour in the early sixties. His first-ever professional win was when he defeated Arnold Palmer in the US Open (1962). At a tender age of 22, Nicklaus was able to win a US Open championship, making him the second youngest winner after Bobby Jones. Because of this win, Nicklaus found himself on the cover of Time magazine. After this historic win, he was able to garner several awards and titles throughout the years, which included a total of 73 PGA Tour wins, 10 Senior Tour wins, and 10 other senior wins. Nicklaus played his last US open game in 2000, although his last professional game was during the Champions Tour's Bayer Advantage Classic held at Overland Park, Kansas.
Because of his golfing prowess, Nicklaus was given several awards. In 1962, he was hailed as the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. In 1974, he was included in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
